SYSTRA performed an analysis of a freight train derailment in Hunt's Point, Bronx, NY to determine the likely cause of the derailment and prepared a report of findings and recommendations. This process involved inspecting the vehicle and track conditions at the site of the derailment, interviewing client and railroad staff, taking field measurements, and researching rolling stock equipment specifications.
Through SYSTRA's investigations, it was determined that a combination of equipment and track problems was the most likely cause of the derailment. SYSTRA prepared a report containing a technical memorandum, equipment specifications, drawings, and color photographs for the clients’ review. SYSTRA also provided several recommendations for track improvements and vehicle operations to help avoid a similar derailment in the future. SYSTRA then awaited authorization to perform preliminary and final track design at this location to improve the track conditions.
